Marco’s Neighboring Isles – The Most Notable of the *Other* Islands

by The Waldren Team 03/06/2024

If you’re on our blog and are familiar with our team, you probably know Marco Island. Often the beneficiary of “Best Places to Live” lists, our Island needs no introduction. Marco, however, only represents one of the many islands located in Southwest Florida. Ask any boater around here; there’s no shortage of islands near Marco. Some are just outlets for secluded boating, while others are also home to inhabitants Here are a few of the other islands aside from beautiful Marco Island.

Isles of Capri

In some ways, Isles of Capri is essentially an extension of Marco. After all, the four islands are only a couple of miles from Marco, contain numerous canals lined by waterfront homes, and multiple iconic tourist destinations are found in Capri. However, Marco’s northern island neighbor also boasts its own personality, with locals showing pride in their home and an increased feeling of seclusion, as nearly all the commercial property rests on one island while the residential property is contained in the other three. By the way, did you also know that every canal on Capri is direct access? Boaters rejoice!

Keewaydin

Ask any local about popular boating destinations, and Keewaydin almost certainly receives mention. Stretching from Isles of Capri to Port Royal in Naples, this narrow island represents a pristine spot for beach lovers, impromptu boat congregations, and nature enjoyment. To that last point, Keewaydin is located within Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and is a massive spot for viewing birds and marine wildlife. If you’re out on the boat, Keewaydin accounts for a solid destination.

Cape Romano

Mention Cape Romano and you will likely hear about the “dome homes” that used to exist on this island just south of Marco. First inhabited in the 1980s, these homes eventually were eroded into the water, and are now underwater. However, this does not render Cape Romano untenable for visiting, as the island still witnesses its share of curious boaters and tourists. Cape Romano still possesses ample beach space too, so bask in the beauty of this island gem. Fun fact: did you know there was also a pyramid house on the island? This home existed on Cape Romano until a tornado claimed it.

Chokoloskee Island

This one is a little farther out than the other ones mentioned, but no doubt exists that Chokoloskee is a treasure. Just south of Everglades City, Chokoloskee is also inhabited, and also flaunts key tourist attractions. Chief among them, Smallwood Store, a general store built in 1917, still exists as a destination for souvenirs and historical appreciation. Chokoloskee is also known for fishing charters and a magnificent Cuban café.

Bottom line, if you've ever wanted to venture out to some of the other islands, we hope this will represent a solid head start in your research! And if you're curious about another island not listed, let us know and we will look into it!
